“Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.”
– Māori Proverb
Let the Solstice light up your life!
Next week, we will be entering the sacred time of the Summer Solstice. It’s a very good time – when the world situation seems so chaotic and disturbing – to zoom our consciousness out and up to the sun. In the northern hemisphere, Friday, June 20th, will be the longest day of the year – the day of the most light and the least darkness. It’s a time to revel in the life-giving power of the sun, the true wealth of this planetary jewel we are so fortunate to inhabit. We are suggesting that this Solstice be a time of celebration, of reflection, and of action.
We can celebrate that we are light beings made of stardust. That is true, both scientifically and spiritually. Every atom in our body originated in a dying star. So we are creatures of the Universe, and as Carl Sagan said, “We are a way for the Universe to know itself.”
Can you imagine yourself that way – a little sun unto itself shining your light out into the world? This might be a good time to shine on anyone around you who needs a bit of light, the warmth of some love. This also goes for folks you think are just fine: Tell them specifically what you love about them and watch them light up inside.
Maybe you yourself need a dose of inner sunshine to illuminate your own inner truths and help you see what you may want to let go of as the summer fully arrives. The abundance of light empowers growth and healing. What is blossoming in your life, and what are you ready to release?
Refresh your relationship with the sun: Turn your face to the sun – for a short while at least – and feel its radiance (and how it’s giving you vitamin D!). Take a sunlit walk in nature, maybe even at sunrise, and notice how everything worships the sun. Sit in meditation and feel the sun’s rays filling you with whatever you feel is missing in your life.
Yes, but what about all the mess of the world? You might ask. Even as the world seems to be unraveling, the Solstice arrives, the cycles of the Earth continue, and we can count on the light to reveal what is hidden and needs healing. As part of the web of life, we are the healers. Ask yourself, not just what am I for or against, but what system can I help regenerate, what injustice can I help right, what good things can I help bring to blossom and fruit?
This poem by Dawna Markova has always been an inspiration to me:
I will not die an unlived life
I will not live in fear
of falling or catching fire.
I choose to inhabit my days,
to allow my living to open me,
to make me less afraid,
more accessible,
to loosen my heart
until it becomes a wing,
a torch, a promise.
I choose to risk my significance;
to live so that which came to me as seed
goes to the next as blossom
and that which came to me as blossom,
goes on as fruit.
May the Solstice light up your soul, and may your summer be joyous, fulfilling, and fun!
With gratitude and appreciation,

Lynne and Sara
Journaling & Meditation
In addition to the suggestions above, you may want to ask yourself or journal about…
- What and who am I ready to shine light on in my life?
- What is glowing in me now, and where am I being called to grow next?
- What do I want to carry with me into the next season? What will I leave behind?
