This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose
recognized by yourself as a mighty one . . .
– George Bernard Shaw
What is yours to do?
Autumn is in the air! And as the season changes, there is often that feeling that it’s time to get to work — or perhaps focus on something new and challenging. This Fall is a particularly stimulating time, with the election here in the U.S. that is crucial to the future of our democratic process. Perhaps you are already engaged and in action — political or otherwise – or perhaps you are contemplating what you can do to contribute to the future you want to see. I have been blessed to find my path to try to make a difference in the world, and I want to share that path with you.
In the past few months, Sara and I have had extraordinary experiences in two parts of the world that are under enormous threat: the Amazon rainforest and the Arctic Circle. We’ve had to confront the fact that the greatest forest on Earth – a major factor in our planetary weather – is on the verge of a very dangerous tipping point. Mining, ranching, agriculture and pollution are threatening vast areas of this magnificent and vital ecosystem. In the Arctic, we’ve witnessed glaciers melting and polar bears struggling — another entire ecosystem of ice and creatures that could soon disappear. So please forgive me if I come across here as intense: it is hard to fathom all that could be lost and what must be saved.
If you are concerned about the future — seeking greater involvement with the world and greater fulfillment for yourself — I want to remind you of my book Living a Committed Life: Finding Freedom and Fulfillment in a Purpose Larger Than Yourself. The message of this book feels profoundly important in these times. We are approaching 2025 – the marker of the first quarter of the 21st century – and the times are indeed scary. The environmental crises of climate change, species extinction, and habitat destruction are interwoven with global economic and political disruptions to form a sort of meta-crisis we cannot ignore. The future of life on Planet Earth is in question, but what is there to do? How do we meet the moment of this epic time in history? What is yours to do?
Helping you answer that question is the purpose of Living a Committed Life. The book is a conversation in which you see and experience how a commitment to some kind of service – be it large or small – can be life-altering, especially when connected to the needs of the world that touch your heart. That commitment enables you to take your grievances and your heartache about the world and do something about it.
Of course, I am hoping you will read the book, but I also want to invite you to a powerful upcoming live workshop I am leading called Living a Committed Life. Sara and I are cooking up incredible content – teachings from the distinctions I wrote about which encompasses decades of my work in the world. It is a maiden voyage for this message and we would love for you to be part of it.
The workshop will take place online over two days, Friday, October 25th, from 8 to 11 am Pacific Time and Saturday, October 26 from 8 to 11 am Pacific Time.
